last night’s mr. robot episode was very reminiscent of the matrix when neo confronted the architect about “choice. the problem is choice.” in the same vein, mr. robot indicated to elliot that he’s either a “1” or a “0.” there were lots of name droppings in this episode with most being steel mountain. most of us in the corporate world have seen or dealt with steel mountain. with the eradication of steel mountain comes the eradication of personal information and a strike at the heart of evil corp. however, to remove steel mountain from the equation, the group, fsociety, have to blow up a factory nearby, killing innocent workers in the process — a quandry of a decision to drop on poor elliot.
in the prologue of this episode, tyrell, the vp of evil corp, offers elliot a decision that had the potential to change his life. he was offered a multi-million dollar position as head of the evil corp cybersecurity offices if he abandons allsafe of his own choosing. it would be a tempting offer for any normal person, but elliot is anything but normal. he can choose to be part of the in-crowd with evil corp. or remain a desk jockey with a pay raise in allsafe. elliot chose the latter. for the better?
in a more interesting note, when elliot hacked tyrell’s account, he found out that tyrell led the perfect life. was it a ruse to draw out elliot? elliot didn’t take a chance and destroyed his equipment.
on a personal front, elliot chose to take down fernando, the creeper, the drug supplier to shayla and himself. this was a momentous decision on elliot’s part as elliot decoded the creeper’s code in his tweets and facebook posts. when elliot found out fernando date-raped shayla, elliot shut the doors on fernando’s enterprise and had the creeper arrested. it was an end to both shayla’s and his drug supply. this could lead to backlash of all kinds.
upon further analysis of the character mr. robot, it appears more and more that mr. robot is something external, something that elliot created. the question remains whether mr. robot is his alter ego or simply a figment of his imagination, the yang to his yin, a counterbalance. eknme thinks mr. robot is definitely part of elliot’s morphine withdrawal as he’s never there when he’s doing drugs. again, how much of mr. robot is elliot?
